Places to Run

Country Park (1.6 miles - 6+ miles)

Country Park is located at 3902 Nathaniel Greene Drive. Entrances to the park are located on the north side of Pisgah Church Road and on the west side of Lawndale Drive.  The Country Park paved loop (1.6 miles) is a one-way, one-lane road open to cars, bikes, in-line skaters and pedestrians.  Runners often connect to Military Park to add another 2.25 miles, or use the Greenway which can add 8+ miles.  It is also a great location for mountain bike enthusiasts and trail runners, with over four miles of unpaved bike trails.

Military Park (2.25 miles - 6+ miles)

There are two access points from Country Park to the National Military Park.  The paved road around the National Park is 2.25 miles long.  There is also a 1.75-mile unpaved trail within the area bounded by the park road.

Bur-Mil Park (4.5 miles)

Bur-Mil Park is located east of Highway 220 North on Owl’s Roost Road.  The Big Loop Trail starts at the parking lot on Owls Roost Road and winds around the outside perimeter of the park. The Big Loop is approximately 3-1/2 miles long. From the fishing pier at the north end of the park, continue along the park road until you reach the park entrance.  The Little Loop Trail starts just southeast of the barn area and forms a loop in the southeast area of the park; it is approximately 1 mile long.  The Owls Roost Trail can also be accessed from Bur-Mil Park east of the fishing pier.  Other amenities at Bur-Mil Park include a par-3 golf course, driving range, swimming pool, fishing pier and clubhouse.

Latham Park/Greenway (5+ miles)

The Latham Park Trail is a paved greenway. Latham Park can be found on Hill Street, just north of Battleground Avenue and Green Hill Cemetery. Parking is available here. The other trailhead, just north of Moses Cone Hospital on the west side of North Elm Street. Access is also possible from Cridland Road, north of Wendover Avenue. Roadside parking is available. Trail users can travel south via Hill Street to Mendenhall Street and access the Lake Daniel Trail. Adding this segment allows for 3.5 miles of almost continuous trail access.

Watershed Trails (10.2 miles)

Piedmont Trail (3.0 miles). The Piedmont Trail lies on the north side of Lake Brandt and is accessible from the west side of Lake Brandt Road, about 1/3 mile north of the Lake Brandt Marina. There is a gravel parking lot at the trailhead. This trail can also be accessed from Strawberry Road. The Piedmont Trail passes through woodlands and open fields.

Owl’s Roost Trail (4.2 miles). The Owl’s Roost Trail starts at the north end of Bur-Mil Park (at the fishing pier). This 4.2-mile trail follows the edge of the peninsula around to the south, ending at the Lake Brandt Greenway. Parking is available at Bur-Mil Park. The Owl’s Roost Trail is fairly rugged compared to some of the other Watershed Trails.

Nat Greene Trail (3.2 miles). The Nat Greene Trail follows the eastern shore of Lake Brandt. The trailheads are found just east of Horse Pen Creek on the north side of Old Battleground Road and at the entrance to the Lake Brandt Marina. The trail can also be accessed from the Lake Brandt Greenway.

Bald Eagle Trail (3.0 miles)

The Bald Eagle Trail can be accessed from Hamburg Mill Road just west of the Lake Higgins Marina entrance. There is a small parking lot at the trailhead. The trail winds along the edge of Lake Higgins. The Bald Eagle Trail is a multiple use trail, designed for mountain bike enthusiasts as well as hikers.

Hagan Stone Park (8.7 miles)

Hagan-Stone Park is located at 5920 Hagan-Stone Park Road in Pleasant Garden, NC, just south of the city limits of Greensboro. Take Hwy. 421 South to Hagan-Stone Park Road and turn right.

There are over eight miles of unpaved trails that hikers can explore in this 409-acre area. The Chatfield Trail, which follows the perimeter of the park, is approximately 4 miles long. This is the longest trail within the park, and it connects with every other in the park.  The Ridge Trail is approximately 1.7 miles long, and makes its loop on the east side of the park.  The H.M. Draper, Jr. Trail is approximately 1.5 miles. This trail makes its loop on the west side of the park, around the campground areas.  The Dogwood Trail is approximately 1 mile long, making its loop in the southwest corner of the park.  The Schoolhouse Trail is the shortest trail in the park at approximately 1/2-mile in length.

Reedy Fork Trail (3.7 miles)

The Reedy Fork Trail starts on the east side of Lake Brandt Road, approximately 1/3 mile north of the Lake Brandt Marina. There is a small gravel parking lot at the trailhead on Lake Brandt Road. The trail travels eastward along the Reedy Fork Creek, ending at the intersection of Plainfield Road and Church Street. The Reedy Fork Trail follows the Reedy Fork Creek between Lake Brandt and Lake Townsend. This is an excellent place to look for waterfowl.

Laurel Bluff Trail (3.5 miles)

The Laurel Bluff Trail starts on the east side of Lake Brandt Road, approximately 1/4 mile north of the Lake Brandt Marina, just south of the Water Resources Department pumping station. The trail can also be accessed from Church Street; there is a small gravel parking lot at the Church Street entrance. The trail traverses beautiful woodland and wetland areas along the edge of Reedy Fork Creek. This is a great place to watch for wildlife.

Jamestown/High Point Greenway (7.5+ miles)

Seven miles of paved greenway trail leading north from High Point City Lake Park, passing through the Piedmont Environmental Center, Jamestown Park and Gibson Park. The rolling terrain includes 7.5 miles of paved trail with each .25 mile marked. You can park at the PEC which is located at mile marker .5, Jamestown Park or Gibson Park which is at mile marker 3.5. Several fairly rugged hiking trails can be found winding along the shores of High Point City Lake, behind the Piedmont Environmental Center on Penny Road. There are also 5+ miles of hiking trails staring from Gibson Park.

Directions to Gibson Park from Greensboro: Take West Wendover Avenue out of town, crossing over I-40. Continue on West Wendover Avenue, crossing Guilford College Road. After crossing over the East Fork of Deep River, the entrance to Gibson Park will be on the left.

Directions to Piedmont Environmental Center from Greensboro: Take West Wendover Avenue towards High Point. Turn Left on Penny Road (about .25 miles before Highway 68). Park entrances will be on your left.

Salem Lake in Winston-Salem (6.94+ miles)

The 6.94 mile loop around Salem Lake is relatively flat and scenic as it hugs the shoreline. The run can be extended by taking the connecting paved greenway several miles toward Old Salem.

From Greensboro take Business I-40 west towards Winston Salem.   Take the Martin Luther King Boulevard exit and turn left.  You will then take another left on ML King Blvd.  Turn left on Reynolds Park Road and a final left on Salem Lake Road. Park in the dirt parking lot on the right at the end of the road.
